Should I donate to the Internet Archive? ›

The Internet Archive is a small non-profit library with a huge mission: to give everyone access to all knowledge, forever. For free. Together we are building a special place where you can read, learn and explore. The Internet Archive has only 150 staff but runs the #250 website in the world.

The Internet Archive hosts a variety of collections that include free images, video, and audio. Some items are stream only and do not allow download. Most items, however, provide links for downloading various files types. MP4 files work well for most video editing applications such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.

Launched on May 10, 1996, the Wayback Machine had saved more than 38.2 billion web pages at the end of 2009. As of January 3, 2024, the Wayback Machine has archived more than 860 billion web pages and well over 99 petabytes of data.

As a library, the Internet Archive has, in the words of the GDPR, a “legitimate interest” in building collections, providing permanent public access, and maintaining archival integrity.

Works that were completed in 1923 or earlier are generally in the public domain. Note, this does not pertain to restored versions of films, new soundtracks or additional enhancements post 1923. Usually, a copyright notice for a new soundtrack or restoration will appear in the film.

Media collections. In addition to web archives, the Internet Archive maintains extensive collections of digital media that are attested by the uploader to be in the public domain in the United States or licensed under a license that allows redistribution, such as Creative Commons licenses.

Do you collect all the sites on the Web? No, the Archive collects web pages that are publicly available. We do not archive pages that require a password to access, pages that are only accessible when a person types into and sends a form, or pages on secure servers.

The court decisively ruled that Internet Archive's practice of scanning books and making them freely available on its website is copyright infringement and does not constitute fair use.

Why can't I borrow books from the Internet Archive? ›

Why are so many books listed as “Borrow Unavailable” at the Internet Archive. More than 500,000 books have been taken out of lending as a result of Hachette v. Internet Archive, the publishers' lawsuit against our library, including more than 1,300 banned and challenged books.

Uploaded files to items do not exceed either 500 files or 500GB of data. Large numbers of files that deserve to be together are zipped and you upload the zip file(s) Uploads do not exceed 5,000 files per day (regardless of the number of items that are created.)

As a result, there are now millions of works available through the Archive and most are available only for “non commercial use” and “with attribution.” Sometimes creators choose a Creative Commons license (creativecommons.org) to express this.

From where does its funding come? The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It receives in-kind and financial donations from a variety of sources as well as you.
